Infographic - Old Economy Meets New Economy

With the labor market returning to normal in metro Atlanta, (and even thriving – see the latest economic news here) it is a good time to see just what skills and occupations employers are hiring for. In this month’s Regional Snapshot, we explore some of the latest labor market trends over the past six months using Burning Glass Labor Insight real-time labor data tool.

Burning Glass extracts key information like occupation type, educational requirements, and skills needed from electronic job postings. From this, we can glean the types of positions that employers need the most. And since we know the educational requirements of most job postings, we can begin to identify and understand the gaps between demand for skills and education required and the supply of skills and education present in the region’s workforce.

Here are some of the key findings:

  • Reflecting the “new economy,” Software Developer is the most in-demand occupation in metro Atlanta, ranking in the top 10 of the most posted occupations among all metro areas. Most of these jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree.
  • The second most in-demand occupation in metro Atlanta is Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, an “old economy” job that is still very much needed.  Only 23 percent of Truck Driving job postings require a college degree.
  • Over the past 12 months, there have been 266,000 postings that require at least a bachelor’s degree and 198,000 postings that require an associate’s degree or less.
