The U.S. Census recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of Manufacturing Week, which it created in 2011 to shine a light on careers in manufacturing. So what’s the state of employment in the industry in Georgia? The chart below shows that, statewide, manufacturing ranks as the fourth most-common work sector.

In Georgia, our top-five employment sectors are:

  1. Educational services, and health care and social assistance
  2. Professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services
  3. Retail Trade
  4. Manufacturing
  5. Arts, entertainment, and recreation, and accommodation and food services

The map below shows employment in our top-five categories in counties across the state; the strength of shading representing just how dominant the category is, with the darkest shades representing up to 65% of employed residents in the county. As we can see, educational services, health care and social assistance represents the dominant sector in most counties across Georgia. Manufacturing is the second-most widespread in dominance even though it ranks fourth in statewide employment.

We can also see that Fulton and Forsyth countries have the highest concentration of residents employed in the professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services industries. Additionally, the arts, entertainment, and recreation, and accommodation and food services industries, though a top-five work sector, is subsumed by other categories throughout the state.
