As host to the Olympics in 1996, one of the 16 World Cup venues twenty years later, and home to a significant foreign-born population,[1] Atlanta has cemented its claim as an international city and region. But with the U.S. Men’s National Team playing all of its group stage matches on the west coast, who can claim home team advantage here in Atlanta?

Let’s construct an index to handicap[2] each of the group stage matches, taking into account teams’ FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking[3] and the number of Atlanta residents born in that team’s home country.[4] We will give 90% weight to the ratio between the two national teams’ FIFA point totals. Each team’s potential for home-field advantage, based on the ratio between the populations born in the two countries, gets 10% weight.[5]

In each of the maps that follow, one dot represents one person, randomly placed within their Census tract of residence.

Even if Spanish phenom Lamine Yamal’s hamstring has not healed in time for this match, Spain will control possession throughout group play. Home-field advantage goes to Spain as well, as it boasts almost 15 times as many Atlantans as Cabo Verde.
Hometown picks: Spain romps, 4-0 (index score 2.70).

Upset alert! Though Czechia is a slightly higher ranked team, and one known for its dangerous set pieces, there are about five times as many Atlantans born in South Africa as in the former Czechoslovakia[7].
Hometown picks: South Africa, with its counterattacking speed, gets the surprise win, 2-1 (index score 1.36).

During group stage play in Qatar, Saudi Arabia upset the ultimate champion, Argentina. It is therefore tempting to predict a repeat performance against Spain. But Spain not only outranks Saudi Arabia, it also has about 1.5 times as many natives residing in the Atlanta region.
Hometown picks: Spain prevails, 3-1 (index score 1.34).

Morocco is the much higher ranked team, and demonstrated four years ago in Qatar that they come to play during World Cup season. But there are more than ten times as many Atlantans born in Haiti than were born in Morocco. Expect this match to be closer than the rankings alone would predict.
Hometown picks: Morocco squeaks by, 3-2 (index score 1.23).

FIFA rating: 1474.43

FIFA rating: 1458.73

As it is being contested by the two most closely ranked teams in Atlanta’s group play, this match may well be the most interesting. Congo DR was the last team to qualify among the 48 teams playing, and has not appeared in the World Cup since 1974[8]. Formerly a Soviet republic, Uzbekistan is making its World Cup debut. Congo DR enjoys both the higher ranking as well as the home-field advantage, though neither by a great margin.
Hometown picks: 1-1 tie (index score 1.10).
