Calculated by ESRI at the census tract level, median net wealth refers to the total wealth minus debts of the typical household in each tract. Household wealth includes equity in a home, business, car, and pension plan as well as any IRAs and interest-earning assets and mutual fund shares, stocks, etc. Debts include both those that are secured, such as home mortgages and car loans, and unsecured, like credit card debt, some bank loans, and outstanding bills.
