ESRI’s diversity index provides an estimate of how likely two people, selected at random from the same geographic area, will belong to different racial or ethnic groups. Available down to the block group level, an index value of 0 means an area exhibits “no diversity” and 100 means that there is “complete diversity.” The values calculated for the Atlanta Metro’s 10-county region, using 2018 census tract level population estimates, range from 0 (in light blue) to 93 (in light pink). Southern DeKalb County and the southwestern portion of the City of Atlanta appear to contain the most areas with low diversity. Gwinnett County and northern DeKalb County exhibit the highest levels of diversity in the region.
