Americans chose the month of May to celebrate Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States to commemorate two important events — the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the contribution of the nation’s Chinese immigrants to the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869.
