Signed on July 26, 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, commercial facilities, telecommunications, and state and local government services. Based on the most recent estimate, there are 40.7 million people living with one or more disability in the U.S., representing 12.8% of the population*. Of Georgia residents, 1.3 million people, or 12.9% of the state’s population, have one or more disability.
This week marks the 28th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The maps below represent where people with one or more disability live in the 20-county Atlanta Metro region, broken out by age groups.
