To measure linguistic isolation, the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey asks respondents how well they speak English. This map shows the top 20% of “neighborhoods” (census tracts are used to represent neighborhoods) that have the highest percentage of residents who speak English less than “very well,” using the mapping tools available through Neighborhood Nexus. In the areas in purple, between 12 and 79 percent of the population (age 5+) speak English less than “very well.” We can see that a large portion of Gwinnett County has a high density of residents speaking English less than “very well,” in addition to areas in north Fulton, Cobb, Hall, and Clayton counties.
